The Mesa State softball team (20-18, 18-18 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) ended the regular season with a series split with Adams State. In game one, Sara Jordan took the loss, her ninth of the season. It was a high scoring affair. The Mavs fell 10-11. Gabriella Parra blasted her 10th home run of the year and collected three RBI’s. Whitney Bailey continued her hot hitting with a three RBI performance of her own. Jordan pitched six innings with six walks and six strikeouts.
Game two had the girls calling mercy as the Grizzlies beat the Mavs 16-8 in five innings. Pitcher Cierra Lard only lasted two and a third innings, giving up 10 runs on 10 hits. Parra had another good game in the batter’s box going 1-3 with three RBI’s.
“Our defense was terrible in the first two games,” Jordan said. “We just had no passion. We just weren’t all there.”
Game one of Sunday’s action was a different story as the Mavs laid down the mercy rule on Adams State, winning 15-3 after six innings. The same batters were the ones who produced as Parra had another multi-RBI game.
It was an all-out battle as the Mavs out-hit the Grizzlies to win 14-12. After a rough start for pitcher Wailana Borrero, Jordan came in and pitched the final four and two-thirds innings to seal the deal. The Mavs gave up nine runs in the bottom of the fourth, but came right back to take the lead in the fifth. Jordan had a good day at the plate, too, with a home run and two RBI’s. Bailey had another stellar performance with two homers and six RBI’s.
“It’s frustrating that I had to come into game two after throwing game one,” Jordan said. “I shouldn’t have to do that but I’m glad I can get the job done for my team.”
It’s now that time of year that the team has been waiting for all year long; the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament. With the fourth seed sealed up, the ladies will play the fifth seed Colorado Mines 9 a.m. Thursday. The tournament will held in Denver as Metro State will be the host school.
“We are expecting to be in the championship and even win it,” Jordan said. “We are on a high right now and need to carry it through RMAC and leave everything on the field.”
