New clubs seek members: Campus grows with student involvement

CMU has 65 registered student clubs and organizations. This number does not include sub-clubs, committees, and a few unregistered clubs.
Club Advisory Board President Jeremy Watson said that clubs and student organizations provide an opportunity for students to get involved and participate, which statistically helps with enrollment and grades.
One of the newest clubs on campus is TOMS Campus club. The club is based around the company TOMS Shoes, which makes a simple shoe and says that for every shoe purchased, they will give a pair of shoes to a child in need.
CMU’s TOMS Campus club is a branch of a nationwide campus club.
“I was inspired by what TOMS does for people,” Club President and founder Annie Halverstadt said. “As a club, we focus more on what TOMS motto is, ‘One for One’ and ‘Start something that matters’.”
Since they are a new club and on a low budget, they are trying to help the community by donating their time to local organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and the Dumb Friends League, an organization that provides humane care to lost and abandoned animals.
TOMS Club meets at 7 p.m. every other Thursday in the University Center room 225.
The Entrepreneurship club, also know as E-club, is a club that’s been on campus for a while, but has gone through changes. The purpose of E-club is to help inform and educate students that are interested in starting their own business or working for a small business.
The club brings many small business owners to campus, or ventures around the state to see them, and find out more about each company. E-club also competes in several competitions throughout the year to help give students real life experience. E-club is not just for business students, but is open to all students in Colorado.
Within the first five weeks into the semester, 11 new clubs were established, including Club Water Polo, Crucial Phaze (Dance club), Health Occupation Students of America, Maverick Fencing Alliance and TOMS Campus club.
Many clubs, new and old, are looking for new members. For a full list of clubs and organizations, or to find out how to start a club, visit the student life tab on the CMU homepage and click on the CAB link. Open enrollment to register a club lasts all year, and all new clubs get a $50 start-up after meeting CAB requirements.
