PR Club looks beyond name change

On Tuesday, the CMU Public Relations Club will host Beyond the Name Change, a professional visit by university officials that played an instrumental role in the name change.
Panelists will include CMU Executive Director of Marketing Rick Taggart, Director of Media Relations Dana Nunn, Director of Marketing and Publication Mike Mansheim and Graphic Artist Jeremy Smith.
Senior mass communications major and PR Club Vice President Katie Schultz will also be on the panel because of her work as communications assistant for the marketing department.
“The name change has a lot of PR elements,” Schultz said. “We as a club thought we’d do something close to home this first time and we thought this would be a good group to start out with.”
The event will be structured like a panel discussion. Club members will act as moderators, asking panelists questions pertaining to the name change and their past PR experience. Guests and other students that attend are welcome to ask questions throughout the event by raising their hand.
The club tries to bring in PR professionals to speak to students at least once a year, but Schultz said she hopes to bring them in more frequently, at least once a semester.
Before the end of the year, the club plans to visit a local PR firm and assist other campus clubs and organizations with their PR needs.
“Many of our members are looking for practical experience,” Schultz said. “We want to reach out to other clubs and help them, so they can also have those abilities in the future.”
Interested clubs can find a job request form on the club’s Facebook page by searching for CMU PR Club.
PR Club asks that clubs in need of their services be as detailed as possible in their request and that they email the form to club President Catie Wezensky one to two weeks before their assistance is needed.
PR Club will also begin planning their Mr. and Mrs. CMU event to take place in the spring.
Beyond the Name Change will take place at 6:30 p.m. in room 312 in the fine arts building. PR Club meets at 4:30 p.m. every Thursday in the mass communications library on the third floor of fine arts.
