The CMU Volleyball team (10-16, 5-11 RMAC) returned to Brownson Arena this weekend, falling to the Western New Mexico University Mustangs 3-0 and snatching a 3-2 victory over the New Mexico Highlands Cowgirls.

The victory over New Mexico Highlands leaves the Mavericks and Cowgirls tied for fourth in the RMAC.

On Friday, the Mustangs swept the Mavericks (25-22, 25-21, 25-13). CMU was plagued by errors, finishing with 30. The Mavericks ended with 32 kills and four team blocks to the Mustangs’ eight.

“We were pretty discouraged from losing the first two sets,” coach Dave Fleming said. “We’re struggling right now and it’s hard to find our confidence.”

Rebecca Sellers and Kelly Regimbal contributed eight kills to the cause. Sunni Rae Baird added 21 assists, five digs and an ace. Sellers also added three service aces, one block, an assist and five digs.

On Saturday, the Mavericks had a rough start as the New Mexico Highlands Cowgirls took the first set 25-21.

CMU came back in the second set with a 25-20 win, and also a 25-18 victory in the third set to lead the match 2-1 going into the fourth.

In set four, the Mavericks took an early lead, then fell behind the Cowgirls, forcing a fifth set after losing 25-17.

The Mavericks came back to win the match 3-2, after a 15-11 final score in the fifth set.

Haleigh Higgins led the Mavericks with eight digs and 21 kills, four in the final set. Sellers added 14 digs and six blocks, and Jordyn Mood finished the game with 49 assists, seven digs, three blocks and two kills.

“Haleigh Higgins was our answer,” Fleming said. “If things weren’t going well we gave her the ball and she got a kill for us.”

CMU will head to Fort Lewis on Tuesday, and then return to Brownson Arena Saturday for their final regular season game against Adams State.
