Not another war: Resolution provides alternative to violence

In the midst of another chemical weapons crisis, our generation balks at the idea of another war.

In 2003, the Bush administration declared “diplomacy has failed.” A “coalition of the willing” was formed as military intervention to rid Iraq of alleged “weapons of mass destruction.” The U.S., as well a few other countries, began the invasion after discussions with the United Nations Security Council went unresolved.
The U.S. sought to justify military action through the UN. Now, they seek to avoid it.

The U.N. Security Council, along with the Obama administration and Russia, agreed on a legally binding resolution to rid Syria of chemical weapons.
Secretary of State John Kerry celebrated the resolution, stating that “diplomacy can be so powerful that it can peacefully defuse the worst weapons of war.”
But will this resolution work?

It’s impossible to tell — but it’s a great first step toward peaceful intervention in Syria.

However, out of all the possible solutions to the Syria problem, Obama bypassed all potentially diplomatic solutions in favor of proposed military strikes. Even if he hadn’t spoken of a forceful invasion of Syria, the American public would likely jump to that conclusion because of our government’s slap-happy, aggressive past in the Middle East.

If this resolution is ineffective, the U.S. is likely to consider military intevention to rid Syria of chemical weapons — but it’s not a war that we want to fight.

We’ve experienced the fear of Sept. 11 and the frustration and turmoil of Operation Iraqi Freedom — a seemingly endless war that took many lives. We’ve grown up watching our government fight meaningless, bloody wars, acting as the global regime-change bully.

If we invade Syria, it will be our friends, siblings, husbands, wives, and parents fighting the war. Our generation has grown up witnessing the inefficacy of violence — we don’t want to grow old with it.
