Miley twerks her way into America’s hearts

I am not ashamed to admit that I love Miley Cyrus. While I don’t necessarily respect her, I can’t help but have a soft spot in my heart for her, twerking and all.

Cyrus’ latest album, “Bangerz,” is a solid change-up for the pop star, but not a truly impressive one.

Released Oct. 8, “Bangerz” is a genuine depiction of Cyrus’ character, who she has become since her years on “Hannah Montana” ended. What is striking about the album is the surprising fusion of pop, ballads, country and rap that she has incorporated into it.

I would argue that Cyrus sounds best when singing a ballad – songs such as “Adore You,” “Wrecking Ball” and “Rooting for My Baby.” Her voice may not sound like Mariah Carey’s, but you can hear the emotion behind the lyrics when she is singing about her ex-fiance, Liam Hemsworth. Although she has kept her private life in the dark, the story is undoubtedly told through her music.

Most of her fun pop songs have a mixture of country or rap in them, which either works or fails miserably. “Someone Else” is the most typically “pop”-sounding track on the album, but it competes with the better-known “We Can’t Stop.”

Miley even works with pop queen Britney Spears on what can be considered the title track, “SMS (Bangerz).” However, the collaboration is not exactly successful and truthfully, the song is annoying.

Cyrus has put in a solid effort for the long-awaited album. Although more of her songs are enjoyable than awful, her voice is not exactly up to par with other pop stars on the rise.
