Gramatik is one of those musical treasures that every fan of electronic music should be aware of.

The artist behind the name, Slovenian-born Denis Jasarevic, released the first album, “The Age of Reason,” off his new personal record label, Lowtemp, on Jan. 25.

“The Age of Reason” is the best combination of electro, funk and soul that I have heard in a very long time. Gramatik combines smooth rhythm and blues with funky beats that make it impossible not to get down and absolutely jam to.

Although there is not a bad track on the album, the songs “Torture,” “Just Jammin’ NYC” and “You Don’t Understand” stick out the most. “You Don’t Understand” is the ultimate track for those who think electronic music is simply “noise”— it begins with a piano melody and some smooth guitar and effortlessly transitions into a bass-filled jam that just keeps getting better the longer you listen.

Whereas many of today’s musicians are concerned with making money and keeping people from illegally downloading their music, Gramatik is one of several unique artists, including fellow electronic DJ Pretty Lights, who believes in what he calls “digital freedom.” Anyone can download or listen to “T.A.O.R.” by going on his website, Gramatik.net, or searching for the album on Spotify.

Whether you are a fan of electronic music or not, “The Age of Reason” is guaranteed to change your mind about the possibilities of a genre that is criminally misunderstood.
